Walking through the city, I often find myself looking at windows longer than buildings. Glass appears to open outward, yet most of the time it reflects another building instead. At some point, I realized that the city is less interested in looking beyond itself than in endlessly looking back at itself.
Reflections never return a building exactly as it is. They blur, bend, overlap, and dissolve into one another, forming landscapes that never truly existed. There are moments when it becomes impossible to tell where the building ends and its reflection begins. In those moments, the city no longer feels like a collection of structures, but like an accumulation of surfaces endlessly reproducing themselves.
I photograph these fragments suspended on glass. Within the frame, monumental architecture becomes a specimen, while the repetition of windows reveals the city's underlying texture. As I step farther away, structures that were once invisible begin to emerge, and familiar scenes become strangely unfamiliar.
Preparat is the German word for a specimen mounted on a microscope slide for observation. I have no desire to dissect the city. I simply want to hold it still for a moment and look more carefully. Within its layers of reflections and overlapping surfaces, the city continually creates and erases its own image.
As a child, I believed a city was made of buildings. Now I think it is made of countless overlapping ways of seeing. What I photograph is not architecture itself, but the face of a city endlessly reflected back upon itself.
