Inside of Spectacle

2017-2018

**〈Inside of Spectacle〉**

From a distance, the city always presents a finished face. Glass, steel, and concrete rise together like a single monument, as though the skyline had assembled itself.
But once I stepped inside the construction site, the city appeared entirely different.
Concrete still waiting to dry, bent electrical wires, worn rubber buckets, crumpled paper bags. Objects that disappear the moment a building is completed were scattered quietly across the floor. Gloves left behind, tools resting against unfinished walls, fingerprints buried beneath fresh paint—small traces that revealed the city not as the product of machines, but of countless human gestures.
As I returned to these sites, I found myself looking less at the walls than at the hands that had shaped them. Even when no workers appeared in the frame, their presence remained. Every surface carried the memory of someone who had lifted, measured, tied, polished, or waited. The city grew not only through materials, but through accumulated hours of human labor.
Once completed, architecture conceals these traces. Smooth walls erase the movements that formed them, and reflective glass no longer remembers the hands that once touched it. What we encounter is the spectacle of the finished city, while the time embedded within its making quietly disappears.
Inside of Spectacle is not an attempt to expose what lies behind architecture. It is an attempt to remember what architecture inevitably forgets. A city never grows by itself. Before every wall is raised, someone reaches out a hand. By the time that hand is gone, the wall is all that remains.
