부산을 기반으로 활동하며 도시와 인간의 관계를 사진으로 탐구한다.
나는 도시를 기록하기보다, 도시를 사이에 두고 살아가는 사람들의 시간을 관찰한다.
오래된 양옥집, 재개발의 경계, 아파트 건설 현장, 유리창에 반사되는 도시, 그리고 밤이 되면 창문 너머로 드러나는 희미한 몸짓까지.
나의 작업은 빠르게 변화하는 도시가 인간의 삶과 기억을 어떻게 바꾸는지를 질문하는 데서 시작된다.
도시는 하나의 풍경이 아니라 시간의 집합이라고 생각한다.
같은 장소도 어느 거리에서 바라보는가에 따라 전혀 다른 이야기를 품는다.
나는 높은 곳에서 도시를 압축해 바라보기도 하고, 건설 현장의 내부로 들어가 노동의 흔적을 기록하기도 하며, 유리 표면에 반사된 도시를 채집하거나 창문 너머의 일상을 오랜 시간 기다리기도 한다.
그렇게 변화하는 것은 도시만이 아니라, 도시를 바라보는 나 자신의 시선이기도 하다.
사진은 나에게 현실을 재현하는 도구가 아니다.
나는 설명보다 응시를, 연출보다 우연을, 극적인 사건보다 반복되는 일상을 믿는다.
멀리서 내려다본 오래된 집 한 채, 아직 굳지 않은 콘크리트, 유리창에 겹쳐진 도시, 창가에 잠시 멈춘 한 사람의 몸짓은 모두 도시를 살아가는 인간의 시간을 드러내는 풍경이다.
나는 사진이 사회를 직접 바꿀 수 있다고 믿지 않는다.
그러나 사진은 우리가 너무 익숙해서 지나쳐 버리는 관계를 다시 바라보게 할 수 있다고 믿는다.
도시와 건축, 사람과 사람, 그리고 시간과 기억 사이의 미세한 거리를 관찰하는 일. 그것이 내가 사진을 계속하는 이유다.

Based in Busan, South Korea, Kwon Haeil explores the relationship between the city and the people who inhabit it through photography.
Rather than documenting the city itself, he observes the time that unfolds between urban space and human life. His work begins with places shaped by continuous transformation—aging Western-style houses, neighborhoods on the edge of redevelopment, apartment construction sites, reflective glass façades, and the faint gestures that appear behind illuminated windows at night. Through these spaces, he reflects on how cities reshape memory, everyday life, and human presence.
For Kwon, the city is not a static landscape but an accumulation of different temporalities. The same place reveals different meanings depending on the distance from which it is observed. He photographs from rooftops overlooking entire neighborhoods, enters the interiors of buildings under construction, studies fragmented reflections on glass, and patiently waits for fleeting moments behind apartment windows. As the city changes, so too does his own way of seeing it.
Photography, for him, is not a means of describing reality but of encountering it. He places greater trust in observation than explanation, in chance rather than staging, and in the quiet repetition of everyday life rather than dramatic events. An aging house viewed from afar, exposed concrete before it hardens, a city reflected on glass, or a figure pausing briefly by a window all become traces of human time embedded within the urban landscape.
Kwon does not believe photography can transform society directly. He believes, however, that it can restore our attention to relationships that have become invisible through familiarity. His practice is an ongoing observation of the subtle distances between architecture and people, memory and place, and the passage of time within the contemporary city
